Project Description

Size & Type of Project – Existing Elementary School Expansion
George Mason Elementary School was originally constructed in 1939 with major renovations thru the ensuing years. The school serves children from the central portion of the city. In 2012 via an emergency procurement, a decision was made to expand the school due to increasing enrollment. The expansion consisted of four new classrooms in the back courtyard adjacent to the gym plus a cafeteria addition for expanded seating.
Modular construction was used for the classrooms with the work including a reconfigured corridor connecting the new classrooms to existing construction. After the modular units were set, a full paneled brick façade was added to blend new construction with the existing school
MCE Scope of Services
Meyer Consulting Engineers Corporation functioned as the Structural Engineer of Record for the project through all phases from schematics through construction administration. Our work began with an existing condition inspection of areas where new construction interfaced with the planned expansions. MCE deliverables consisted of large scale structural drawings and manuscript structural specifications with the former prepared in REVIT.
Design work began in January 2013 and was completed in June 2013. The original scope was for the classroom additions only but the work was expanded during the design process to include the cafeteria addition. Construction was completed in August 2014 at a cost of $1.6 Million. Key MCE personnel included Lawrence S. Nagielski, P.E. (Principal Project Structural Engineer), Sanjoy Bose, P.E. (Senior Project Structural Engineer & Project Manager) and James Livingston (BIM/CAD Director).
