Project Description

Size & Type of Project – Structural Evaluation & Repair
Cherokee Lane Elementary School was originally constructed in 1961 and added onto in 1963. The 1963 addition, or east wing, consists of approximately 11,200 gross framed square feet and houses classrooms. The classrooms are over a confined crawl space. The floor framing over the crawl space is a cast-in-place concrete deck supported by concrete joists in turn supported by inverted precast concrete Ts. In late 2007, teachers noted that the floors were uneven.
MCE Scope of Services
Meyer Consulting Engineers was retained on an emergency basis to investigate existing conditions and evaluate the structural stability of the classroom decks. Our investigation, done both visually and with ground penetrating radar, indicated extreme concrete deterioration. The crawl space was enclosed and not vented properly. Steam was leaking into the crawl space and exacerbated the degradation of structural framing components. MCE recommended immediate emergency shoring to stabilize the framing components. We were then instructed to proceed with the design of structural repairs. The structural repairs utilized advanced carbon wrap (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) technology. During the construction phase, MCE inspectors monitored the repair work for conformance to plans.
